The Department for Education (DfE) aims to ensure that all children have equal access to high-quality physical education (PE) and opportunities to engage in a variety of sports and physical activities. Schools should strive to offer at least 2 hours of high-quality PE and sport each week, supplemented by a diverse range of extracurricular sports and competitive opportunities. This approach can enhance children’s health and wellbeing, personal development and academic performance.
Schools should utilise the PE and sport premium funding to help children achieve 60 active minutes per day and meet these objectives. This funding should not be used for regular school activities. Instead, it should be allocated to:
At Waycroft Academy, we effectively utilise our sports premium funding to enhance the quality and breadth of our physical education and sports programs. The Academy collaborates with the Bristol Sports Foundation to deliver high-quality gymnastics lessons, continuous professional development (CPD) for staff and robust after-school clubs. Additionally, we are strengthening our involvement with the Ashton Park Sports Partnership, taking part in more events and we are contributing to the costs of swimming lessons and transport. The funding also allows our school to access top-tier coaching and support at competitions and events through the Grassroots Sports Organisation. To ensure inclusive participation, we offer focused lunchtime sports sessions, catering to both boys and girls. Furthermore, Waycroft Academy provides high-quality dance workshops from the Education Group or similar organisations, integrating these activities with the substantive and disciplinary knowledge of the history, geography and science curriculum.
