Sun Safety Guidance
Rationale
At Waycroft Academy we acknowledge the importance of sun protection and want staff and pupils to enjoy the sun safely.
Guidelines
We will work with staff, pupils and parents to achieve this awareness of the sun through:
EDUCATION
- We will talk about how to be safe in the sun in assemblies at the start of the summer term and before the summer holidays.
- Parents and guardians will be sent a letter explaining what the school is doing about sun protection and how they can help at the beginning of the summer term to reinforce this at home.
- Teachers will be given information on sun safety at a staff meeting where any further questions/training needs can be addressed.
- Children will be taught the phrase ‘Wrap, Splat, Hat’ as a way of remembering how they can stay safe in the sun.
PROTECTION
Shade:
- When the sun is strong we will encourage pupils to sit/play in the shade where it is available.
- Reception and nursery classes have access to shaded areas for their outside learning.
Clothing:
- When outside in sunny weather, children are encouraged to wear hats that cover the ears, face and neck.
Sunscreen:
- Sunscreen use will be encouraged on days when the sun is strong during summer at lunch breaks, during PE lessons and on school trips.
- Parents/Carers need to apply sunscreen before school. Children are not permitted to bring sunscreen into school.
Water:
- Water is accessible to both KS1 and KS2 during break and lunch times.
- Children are encouraged to bring in water bottles and drink throughout the day.
- Children have access to cups of water in both the packed lunch and cooked meal halls.
